My Cooling Project

You'll have to excuse the B&W pictures, but I'm a pooor college student and all I have aceess to is an old Quickcam. All totalled, this project cost me $2 to complete. I picked up the fan at my schools computer grave yard, which is what cost me the $2. The aluminum I picked up as scrap for free, and shaping it requires nothing more than a hacksaw, file, drill, and a couple pair of pliers. Drilling the holes in the case was the most time consuming part. Another method would be to cut a hole in the side of the case and cover itwith wire mesh, speaker grill, or what ever else happens to be handy. Clickon any of the pictures to see an enlarged version.

Here's a picture of my computer before I added the fan.

Here's a picture of the fan assembly. The fan is mounted on a 2"x6" piece of 1/8" sheet aluminium. I removed the excess above the fan as well as where the aluminum interferred with the air flow. Due to the height of the CL Bansheecard that I'm cooling, I also had to bend the aluminum to create clearance for the card.

Here is a picture of the fan attached to my computer. I used normal slot coverscrews to attach the aluminum to the top two unused slots in my case. The fan sticks out pretty far, and the next modification I need to make is to drill holes in the side of the case cover so the fan can draw cool air into the case.

This picture shows the finished case. The dark patch on the left side is where I drilled the holes to allow the fan to bring air into the case. Theholes are spaced 3/16" from center to center and were drilled out using a 3/32" drill bit. I used a square to grid where each hole was to be drilled and then center punched each hole to prevent the drill bit from slipping. Overall this was definitly the most dificult and time consuming part of the construction.
